Field number is the specification that decides how much of the image you actually see. A 22 mm field number shows meaningfully more of the specimen than the 18 mm eyepieces that shipped on older stands, and on an instrument whose optics already support it, swapping eyepieces is the cheapest field-of-view upgrade available.
These are sold as a matched pair. Mismatched eyepieces cause the eye strain people usually blame on the microscope.
